5 Signs You Need New Gutters

Published 9/2/2014

Even though you may not realize it, gutters play a key role in protecting your home from water damage. If they are not performing correctly, the results can include mold growth, damage to the foundation, rotting of interior walls, and other problems that require costly repairs. While the best defense against these problems it to make sure to have your gutters cleaned at least twice each year, there are plenty of signs that show your gutters are not performing properly. Below you will find five signs that show its time to replace your gutter system, rather than simply cleaning it.

1. Sagging or Pulling Away

Your gutters should be level, and firmly attached to your home. If you notice any sagging, or areas where the gutter has come loose, it may be time to replace them. Pay close attention to the seams as well to make sure they are not pulling away from each other.

2. Obvious Damage

If you can see obvious damage, such as dents, holes, bent areas, or cracks, they are good indications that your gutter is not properly routing the water away from your home.

3. Cracks or Mold Around Your Foundation

If there are areas of your foundation that are growing mold, or show signs of cracking, this is often the result of gutters that are not directing the water away from the foundation of your home.

4. Basement Leaks

A majority of standing water or leaks in the basement are due to gutters that are not functioning properly. If your basement is leaking, there may also be mold growth as well.

5. Rust Stains, Peeling Paint, or Rotted Wood

When gutters are clogged or not draining properly, you may notice areas of rust or corrosion around them. Additionally, peeling paint or areas of rotted wood are also clear signs that your gutters are not working.

If you notice any of these signs, you need to have your gutters cleaned and inspected. A professional will be able to determine whether the issues can be repaired, or if it is time for a new gutter system. Call us today at 800-640-9170.
